Iridex DioLite: Laser for the treatment of vascular and pigmented lesions
How does the Iridex work?
An intense beam of light is generated through the hand-piece while it is applied to the skin. This light is absorbed by oxyhemoglobin and mealinin/pigment causing the destruction, by heat, of undesired cells. Normal, healthy cells are left behind.
Vascular lesions
Lesions developed by abnormally large or numerous blood vessels located directly under the surface of the skin. These vessels may be visible through the skin and are called Spider Veins (Spider Angiomas). If the veins are not visible through the skin, red blotches or lesions may appear.
Pigmented Lesion
The dark pigment in the skin is called melanin. Melanin is produced by melanocytes. Pigmented lesions often occur when an excessive amount of melanocytes are found within a particular area of the skin. When darker pigment multiplies, freckles, age spots, moles, and brown spots develop.
What is the treatment like?
Treatment times and degrees may vary greatly depending on patient characteristics and the skin being treated. During the treatment the patient wears special goggles to protect the eyes from the laser and reclines in a comfortable chair often listening to relaxing music. The provider will use a thin handpiece to treat the lesion. In a majority of cases, anesthesia is not necessary.
Patients have reported slight stinging followed by redness which usually lasts 2-4 hours. Some swelling may occur, and if it does, subsides within 1-2 days.
Postoperatively, care is minimal. Anti-bacterial ointment may be applied and it is best to avoid sun exposure during the healing process. Final results are usually evident 10-14 days post treatment for vascular legions and 2-3 weeks for pigmented lesions. Normal daily activities can be resumed immediately following the treatment.
