A comprehensive eye examination is recommended every year to ensure clear vision and healthy eyes for al lifetime. Some vision problems occur without any symptoms, making an annual exam critical for early detection and treatment of these types of conditions. During the eye examination we will take many measurements to assess the vision you have, and provide you the best potential vision possible. We not only examine the vision, but how well your eyes are working together (binocularity), and the health of your eyes. With a special microscope called a slit lamp, we are able to examine the front of your eyes: we examine the lids, lashes, cornea, conjunctiva, iris and lens. By doing so we can find conditions such as dry eye syndrome, blepharitis, or cataracts.
When we evaluate the internal structures of the eye, we are able to look at the retina for signs of predisposition to have damage from glaucoma, age related macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy among others. By dilating the pupil, we are able to view peripheral portions of the retina and have a clearer view of all internal structures, including the optic nerve and cataracts.
